TOLEDO, OH – The Iowa Cubs (26-37) were held scoreless by the Toledo Mud Hens (36-28), losing 3-0 in the sixth and final game of the series, Sunday at Fifth Third Field.

The Mud Hens scored early against Iowa’s starter Adrian Sampson, scoring two runs in the first inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Willi Castro hit Sampson’s first pitch of the game out of the ballpark, followed by a Renato Núñez triple. Nunez would come around on an RBI groundout from Yariel Gonzalez to score their second run.

Sampson would settle down, pitching five innings for the eighth consecutive game. He gave up just one more run in the sixth on an Aderlin Rodriguez RBI double, totaling three earned runs on six hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

Unfortunately for Iowa, the pitcher on the other side, Mark Leiter Jr., was even better than he was on Tuesday against the I-Cubs, giving Toledo five scoreless innings. Leiter Jr. allowed just two hits and one walk, while striking out six batters including the final three he faced in the fifth.

Ryan Lawlor, Manuel Rodriguez and Trevor Megill kept Iowa in the game, combining to throw three scoreless frames. Iowa had their chances in the late innings, leaving two men on in the seventh and the bases loaded in the eighth, failing to score a run and losing the final game of the series 3-0.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Matt Duffy went 2-for-3 with a double in his fourth game on his major league rehab assignment, raising his average to .308 with the I-Cubs.

Manuel Rodriguez struck out two batters and Trevor Megill struck out three in their combined 2.1 innings out of the bullpen tonight.

• Toledo out-hit Iowa by one, 7-6 in tonight’s game. It marked the first game of the series that the I-Cubs were out-hit.
