Four Run Third Inning Gives Iowa Series Lead

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Cubs (29-34) scored four runs in the third inning to beat the Omaha Storm Chasers (30-32) to take a 3-1 series lead, Friday at Principal Park. Matt Dermody gave Iowa four scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out six.

Matt Dermody gave Iowa four scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out six. The I-Cubs’ offense gave him four runs of support in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from David Bote.

The game stayed at 4-0 until the sixth, when Vinnie Pasquantino hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Omaha’s first run of the game. They scored a second run the following inning on a bases loaded walk, cutting Iowa’s lead to 4-2.

Nelson Maldonado brought the lead back to three with a solo shot in the home half of the inning, but the Storm Chasers answered right back on an RBI single by Jose Briceno.

Up 5-3 in the ninth, Erich Uelmen entered the game and despite allowing a leadoff single, struck out the final three batters to earn Iowa their third win of the series.

POSTGAME NOTES:

• Matt Dermody had his best start of the year, throwing four innings of one-hit ball. The four scoreless innings lowered his ERA on the year to 5.48.

• Darius Hill went 2-for-4, bringing his average with Iowa to .400. The outfielder now has seven multi-hit performances through his first 12 games with the I-Cubs.

• Nelson Maldonado hit his second home run in as many games, giving him three on the year with Iowa.

• Erich Uelmen struck out the final three batters he faced to close the game out and give Iowa a 5-2 win. The righty earned his team-leading fourth save of the year.
