SALT LAKE CITY, UT - In a back-and-forth battle, the Salt Lake Bees (21-15) captured a 5-4 victory over the Iowa Cubs (14-20) with a walk-off inside-the-park home run from Nolan Fontana, Saturday at Smith's Ballpark.
Iowa trailed 2-3 heading into the seventh, but RBI singles from Chris Dominguez and Victor Caratini gave the I-Cubs a one-run edge. Salt Lake immediately fought back with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame to knot the game and eventually send the contest to extras. Dylan Floro pitched a scoreless 10th, but Fontana drilled a ball into the left-center gap to lead off the 11th and whirled around the bases to give the Bees the walk-off win.
Seth Frankoff had not allowed a hit through three, but rehabbing C.J. Cron broke the streak with a leadoff home run in the fourth inning. Frankoff's night ended after six with the righty allowing three earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts for his second consecutive quality start. Justin Grimm appeared in his first game for Iowa of the season and spun 2.0 scoreless frames.
Dominguez led the I-Cubs' offensive effort with a 2-for-5 game with a pair of RBI. Chesny Young also chipped in two hits.
Iowa and Salt Lake wrap the series at 2:05 p.m. CT tomorrow at Smith's Ballpark. Listen on AM 940, stream the broadcast live on www.iowacubs.com or watch with MiLB.TV.
