Diaz homers, drives in four, Shrimp beat Shuckers, 7-4

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp second baseman Isan Díaz homered for a third straight game while driving in a season-high four runs, and right-hander Jordan Yamamoto earned his first Southern League win in a 7-4 victory over the Biloxi Shuckers in front of 8,044 on Ace Ventura Night Saturday


JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp second baseman Isan Díaz homered for a third straight game while driving in a season-high four runs, and right-hander Jordan Yamamoto earned his first Southern League win in a 7-4 victory over the Biloxi Shuckers in front of 8,044 on Ace Ventura Night Saturday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The Jumbo Shrimp (10-13 second half, 38-53 overall) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning against Biloxi right-hander Marcos Diplan (0-1). Left fielder Braxton Lee led off with a walk and scored on Diaz's one-out home run to right field. In the bottom of the second inning, Diplan walked right fielder John Norwood, and third baseman Brian Schales hit an RBI double to left field. After an error and strikeout, Lee drove in Schales with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Yamamoto (1-0) held the Shuckers (11-11, 52-40) hitless for the first three innings. In the top of the fourth inning, Biloxi third baseman Lucas Erceg hit a leadoff single to right field, stole second base and scored on a two-out single by Shuckers right fielder Trent Grisham. Catcher Max McDowell reached on an error by shortstop Joe Dunand, and Diplan hit a two-run double to left-center field. Yamamoto retired center fielder Corey Ray to preserve the 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, Diplan walked Schales, catcher Rodrigo Vigil singled, and Yamamoto walked. Left fielder Braxton Lee hit an RBI single to left field to chase Diplan, and Diaz added a one-out, two-run single down the first-base line against right-hander Cody Ponce to extend the lead to 7-3. Diplan allowed seven runs - six earned - in three-plus innings. Ponce followed with three scoreless innings.

Biloxi first baseman Jake Gatewood hit a fifth-inning solo home run to trim the lead to 7-4. Yamamoto allowed four runs - two earned - in five innings, before right-hander Kolton Mahoney pitched three scoreless innings, and left-hander Dylan Lee pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save.
UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp will continue their series with Biloxi at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, when Jacksonville right-hander Robert Dugger (2-2) is scheduled to face Shuckers right-hander Zack Brown (8-0). Gates open at 2 p.m., when families can play catch on the field, followed by player autographs on Baptist Health Sunday Family FUNday. Kids activities will be in the Wolfson Children's Hospital Kids Zone, and after the game, kids 12 and under can run the bases. Ring Power Touch a Truck will let kids explore giant equipment. Words with Fans will include the Jumbo Shrimp wearing specialty game-board jerseys and hats. Select jerseys will be auctioned during the game, with the rest in an online auction. The first 1,000 fans will receive 8-point J-Shrimp tile coasters. The 2017 North American Scrabble Champion, Will Anderson, will throw a first pitch and attempt to break the record for simultaneous games of Scrabble. Fans who donate a book at the gate to the Florida Baptist Children's Home receive $1 off a game day reserved seat. The game is presented by Easy 102.9.
