Eight unanswered runs sink Jacksonville 8-5

MOOSIC, Pa. – Karson Milbrandt had seven strikeouts in four innings but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 8-5 Friday night at PNC Field.
Jacksonville (73-73, 31-41) opened the scoring in the top of the first. With one out Juan Matheus singled and went to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Johnny Long singled home a run in the next at-bat, putting the Jumbo Shrimp ahead 1-0.
The Jumbo Shrimp padded their lead in the third. Brendan Jones walked and stole second. Matthew Etzel drew a walk in the ensuing at-bat and a double steal put runners on second and third. Juan Matheus loaded the bases with a walk and Long plated Jones with a sac fly, increasing the lead to 2-0. Two batters later, Brayden Taylor drove in a pair with a two-run double pushing the lead to 5-0.
From then on, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (77-68, 40-31) controlled the game. In the fourth, Marco Luciano walked and Yanquiel Fernandez (27) crushed a two-run homer, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
Two batters later, Duke Ellis singled and stole second. Kenedy Corona reached on a dropped third strike, wild pitch and Ellis went to third. Connor McGinnis drove in Ellis with an RBI double, making it a two-run game.
The RailRiders exploded for five runs in a nine-batter fifth. JC Escarra singled with one out and scored on a double from Luciano as Scranton climbed back to a one-run game. Fernandez walked in the next at-bat and Tyler Hardman (14) flipping the game and putting Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 7-5.
Ellis followed with a base hit and advanced to second on a single from Corona. A wild pitch had Ellis thrown out at the plate and Corona went to third. A second wild pitch scored Corona pushing the lead to 8-5.
Jacksonville and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continue their series with Saturday’s 6:05 p.m. contest. LHP Patrick Monteverde (5-2, 5.82 ERA) gets the ball for the Jumbo Shrimp and the RailRiders will counter with RHP Alexander Cornielle (5-4, 2.74 ERA) ERA).
