Pensacola Pours It On In Historic 17-1 Rout

Lutz hits for cycle, Blue Wahoos set franchise bests in hits and runs in lopsided victory
April 21, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, FL - In a historic night that featured a cycle and new franchise highs in hits and runs for Pensacola (8-10), the Blue Wahoos ended the Jacksonville Suns' (8-10) four-game winning streak in a 17-1 walloping of the Suns Monday night at Bragan Field.

Hear manager Andy Barkett's postgame comments here:

Every Pensacola position player in Monday night's starting lineup had at least one hit, including Donald Lutz, who hit for the cycle in a game where he'd finish five-for-six with one home run, one triple, two doubles, one single, two RBI and four runs scored.

Monday night's cycle is the first in Pensacola history and is also the third of his career, with Lutz having accomplished the feat as a Dayton Dragon in a July 21, 2011 Midwest League game against Peoria, as well as on July 10, 2009 as a member of the GCL Reds.

The Blue Wahoos would score four or more runs in three different innings Monday night, finishing with 22 hits; the most ever collected in a single game by Pensacola in team history. Seven Pensacola hitters had multi-hit games, while six different Blue Wahoos finished with at least two runs batted in.

Robert Stephenson (W, 2-1) earned the win after allowing one run on four hits in five innings, while finishing with three walks and seven strikeouts. He also helped his cause at the plate with two base hits and three RBI.

Angel Sanchez (0-4) will have to wait another start to try and earn his first Southern League win, taking the loss after allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings, while walking two Blue Wahoos and striking out three.

Alfredo Silverio and Brady Shoemaker each had two-hit nights in a losing effort for Jacksonville.

At three hours and 36 minutes, Monday night's ballgame is the longest contest the Suns have been involved in on the early 2014 season.

The Suns and Blue Wahoos will be back at it tomorrow night for the fourth game of this five-game series, with Tuesday's first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET. Jacksonville will send left-hander Justin Nicolino (1-2, 3.38) to the mound (0-3, 4.20) on Tuesday, as he's set to be countered by Pensacola right-hander Jon Moscot (0-1, 2.20)

Suns fans can listen to Tuesday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through www.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 6:50 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show.
