Jacksonville swats 13 hits in 9-6 win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

MOOSIC, Pa. – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp swatted 13 hits en route to a 9-6 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Wednesday afternoon from PNC Field.

Jacksonville (72-72, 30-40) opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first. With one out, Cam Cannarella singled and went to third on a single by Johnny Long and an error. Long went to second on the error and Matthew Etzel walked loading the bases. Brayden Taylor hit a sacrifice fly, plating Cannarella for the game’s first run. Juan Matheus followed with a two-run double, plating Long and Etzel, giving the Jumbo Shrimp a 3-0 headstart.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (75-67, 39-30) scratched a run across in the bottom of the first. Jasson Dominguez (8) crushed a solo homer, cutting the game to two.

The Jumbo Shrimp added two more runs in the second. With one out, Brendan Jones singled and went to second as Brandon Compton reached on catcher’s interference. In the ensuing at-bat, Cannarella walloped a ground-rule double scoring Jones from second, increasing the advantage to three runs. Long followed with an RBI knock of his own, pushing the advantage to 5-1.

The RailRiders slowly came back and started in the bottom of the third. Dominguez was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to third on a base hit from JC Escarra. Marco Luciano followed with a sac fly, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

The offense for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continued in the fourth. Kenedy Corona doubled and scored two batters later on an RBI base hit from Dominguez, making it a two-run contest.

The RailRiders struck hard and evened the game in the bottom of the sixth. Abraham Gutierrez singled and Jarred Kelenic (8) followed with a game-tying two-run shot.

Jacksonville broke the tie in the seventh and never looked back Cannarella opened the frame with a double and scored three batters later on a double from Taylor, giving the Jumbo Shrimp a 6-5 advantage.

The lead increased in the in the top of the eighth frame. Bennett Hostetler began the inning with a double and scored on a base hit from Taylor. Compton followed with a double, plating Jones for an 8-5 lead. Cannarella’s groundout pushed Compton to third and he scored on a groundout from Long, giving the Jumbo Shrimp a four-run cushion.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre did not disappear in the ninth. Dominguez and Escarra began the inning with consecutive singles. Luciano drove in Dominguez with the third-straight base hit, cutting the deficit to three, 9-6. The scoring ceased there, Stephen Jones induced a double play in the next at-bat and a flyball to finish off the RailRiders.

Jacksonville and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continue their series with Thursday’s 7:05 p.m. contest. RHP Jace Beck (1-2, 6.82 ERA) gets the ball for the Jumbo Shrimp and the RailRiders will counter with LHP Kyle Carr (0-2, 5.06 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN 690 and ESPN690.com
