Jacksonville scores all five runs in fifth inning

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (4-2, 33-43) defeated the Montgomery Biscuits (3-3, 47-28) by a 5-3 score in the first game of the five-game series at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium on Tuesday night.


MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (4-2, 33-43) defeated the Montgomery Biscuits (3-3, 47-28) by a 5-3 score in the first game of the five-game series at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium on Tuesday night.

Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Jorge Guzman (4-7) earned the victory, pitching five innings where he allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Biscuits left-handed relief pitcher Josh Fleming (5-4) took the loss, pitching seven innings where he allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher Dylan Lee allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth but got the final outs to record his eighth save of the season.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when a David Rodríguez RBI double gave the Biscuits a 1-0 lead. The Biscuits remained in front until the top of the fifth inning, when Jacksonville scored five runs. Santiago Chávez tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single. That was followed later in the inning by a three-RBI triple for Riley Mahan that gave Jacksonville a 4-1 lead. Joe Dunand brought home Mahan from third on an RBI groundout to put the lead at 5-1. The Biscuits got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run by Miles Mastrobuoni to cut Jacksonville's lead to 5-2.

Jacksonville relief pitchers Alex Mateo and Brett Graves worked the next three innings ins scoreless fashion. The Biscuits grabbed a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double by Tristan Gray, but Lee got the next three batters out to preserve the 5-3 win.

The Jumbo Shrimp and Biscuits will continue their series with the second game of the five-game set on Wednesday night at 7:35 p.m. eastern. Left-handed pitcher Daniel Castano (0-0, 1.98 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Montgomery right-handed pitcher Riley O'Brien (4-4, 3.42 ERA).
