Suns finish 6-2 win over Mobile; rain cancels nightcap
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Suns right-hander Chris Mazza worked five innings in relief to help his team finish a 6-2 win in the completion of a suspended game against the Mobile BayBears, before rain canceled the scheduled seven-inning game at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Saturday night.
Regular individual tickets for Saturday (as well as Thursday and Friday) may be exchanged at the box office for a ticket of equal or lesser value to either of the two remaining home dates. A doubleheader of seven-inning games is scheduled for Sunday, and a single nine-inning game is scheduled for Monday. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. Sunday for the 6:35 p.m. doubleheader. Gates open at 1 p.m. Monday for a 2:05 p.m. game.
The teams resumed play from Friday in the bottom of the third inning with the Suns (31-35 second half, 61-75 overall) holding a 5-1 lead over the BayBears (32-33, 64-71). Mazza (6-5) began the top of the fourth inning and retired the first six batters he faced, before working around two hits in a scoreless sixth inning.
Jacksonville added a run against BayBears right-hander Cole Johnson in the fourth inning. Center fielder Kenny Wilson, who hit a leadoff home run in a five-run first inning Friday, hit a one-out single to left field, stole second base, and scored on right fielder Alex Glenn's RBI single for a 6-1 Suns lead. Johnson then set down seven consecutive hitters to finish 3 2/3 relief innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
The BayBears tallied their only run against Mazza in the seventh inning. Pinch hitter Stewart Ijames drew a leadoff walk, went to second base on a groundout by shortstop Domingo Leyba, and scored on left fielder Chuck Taylor's RBI single to right field. Mazza held the 6-2 lead through the eighth inning, allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Suns right-hander Tayron Guerrero struck out two batters and walked one in a scoreless ninth inning.
UP NEXT: The Suns will continue their series with Mobile at 6:35 p.m. Sunday.
