Hamilton strikes out career-high 4 at Rome
ROME, Ga. (August 24, 2016) - Reliever Ian Hamilton struck out a career-high four batters over 2.0 scoreless innings, but the Intimidators struggled at the plate over the final seven innings in a loss at Rome, 7-4, on Wednesday at State Mutual Stadium. Kannapolis (30-29 Second Half, 54-75) dropped its fourth straight game, the team's longest losing skid since falling in four straight July 17-21.
The Braves held the Intimidators off the board over the final seven innings as Mike Soroka (8-9) earned the win, working around four runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out six and walked one before turning the ball over to relievers Oriel Caicedo and Chase Johnson-Mullins, who combined for 3.0 scoreless innings to close the game. Johnson-Mullins earned the save (2).
Kannapolis jumped ahead in the top of the first as Tyler Sullivan and Alex Call singled to set up Danny Mendick's RBI-base hit for a 1-0 lead. The Braves leapfrogged the Intimidators in the home half of the inning when Austin Riley doubled to score Kevin Josephina, and Carlos Castro added a 2-out RBI-single to cash Riley to put Rome in front, 2-1.
The teams traded 3-run frames in the second inning. In the top of the frame, Kannapolis opened the inning with three straight singles by Cody Daily, Bradley Strong, and Jake Fincher to tie the game, 2-2. Tyler Sullivan followed with a grounder to first base that Rome's Juan Yepez misplayed, allowing two runs to score on the play for a 4-2 Intimidators advantage before the Braves jumped back on top, 5-4, in the bottom of the inning.
Intimidators starter Jimmy Lambert (0-4) suffered his third straight loss, allowing five runs on six hits while walking three in 2.0 innings of work. Relievers Johnathan Frebis and Hamilton each spun 2.0 scoreless innings. Frebis faced the minimum in the third and fourth innings in his first relief appearance of the season. The Braves added a pair of runs off Danny Dopico in the seventh and eighth innings, including a Ray-Patrick Didder solo home run (6).
Frebis' move to the rotation opens a starting spot for White Sox second round pick Alec Hansen, who will make his Class A debut for Kannapolis on Friday at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System.
This 3-game wraps up on Thursday as RHP Brannon Easterling (6-3, 2.17 ERA) starts for Kannapolis against Rome's RHP Touki Toussaint (4-8, 4.11 ERA) with first pitch at 7:00 p.m. The Intimidators return home on Friday for the final three home games of the 2016 regular season against the new Columbia Fireflies (NY Mets).
