KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators (18-21) started a new series Friday night against the Delmarva Shorebirds (30-8), with Delmarva getting the best of Kannapolis in 10 innings, 2-0.
After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning without giving up any runs, Johan Dominguez's day quickly ended with a line of 3.0 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, and 2 K when the bases were loaded once again with no outs in the top of the fourth.
Vince Arobio (2-1, 3.66 ERA) got the call out of the bullpen to try to get out of the jam and did so by striking out two and getting a groundout to end the inning. His hot streak continued through the seventh inning where he pitched four hitless innings and had seven strikeouts.
With both sides struggling to get the bats going, Kannapolis' best chance came in the bottom of the fourth. With two on and two outs, a Luis Curbelo pop up near first base, that Delmarva's first baseman Andrew Fregia misplayed, fell foul by about a foot, giving Curbelo another chance. After a nine-pitch at-bat, Curbelo struck out on a high heater to end the threat for Kannapolis.
Sam Long (2-0, 4.15 ERA) came in for Arobio and threw two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth to push Kannapolis into extra innings with the score still 0-0.
Lane Ramsey (L, 0-2) took the bump for the start of the tenth for the Intimidators. In extra innings, each team starts with their most recently batter out on second base and Delmarva took advantage of that quickly when a ground ball from Adam Hall scored Alexis Torres for the first run of the game. A sacrifice fly from Doran Turchin then scored Hall to give Delmarva a 2-0 lead.
Despite threatening with runners on the corners and no outs, the bottom of the tenth went exactly how the rest of game went, with Kannapolis just not being able to get the base hit needed to get a run across.
Kannapolis will continue its series with Delmarva on Saturday with a double header, the first of which beginning at 5:30 p.m. RHP Kade McClure will get the start for the Intimidators in game one, with RHP Wilber Perez getting the ball for the second game of the double dip.
