Knights Sweep the G-Braves, Win 12-10 Wednesday

August 6, 2014

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Josh Phegley drove in six of Charlotte's 12 runs, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Gwinnett Braves 12-10 on Wednesday in the finale of their two-game series from BB&T Ballpark. With the win, the Knights earned a series sweep of the Braves and moved into sole possession of second place in the IL South Division (7.5 games back of Durham).

Phegley continued his hot-hitting on Wednesday and came close to an all-time game high. Charlotte's hard-hitting backstop - a 2014 International League All-Star - went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double, a home run, and six RBIs. The home run for Phegley, which came in the fourth inning off Gwinnett reliever Zach Stewart - a former teammate - was his 18th of the season. Phegley's six-RBI game was one shy of his career game-high (7), set back on June 2, 2011 while with Birmingham. He was also a triple shy of the cycle.

Bobby Doran (3-1, 6.55) started for the Knights and allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings en route to his third win of the season with Charlotte. Doran compiled a 2-4 mark with a 5.36 ERA in 21 games for Oklahoma City earlier this season. Reliever Ryan Kussmaul recorded the final three outs to earn his fifth save of the season.

Chicago White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored on Wednesday. In five games with the Knights on his Major League Rehab assignment, Garcia is hitting .527 (10-for-19) with a home run. Michael Taylor added three hits for the Knights to extend his hit streak to six consecutive games. Taylor was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

The Knights will now open a four-game series with the Pawtucket Red Sox on Thursday. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. opener against the PawSox. It's Thirsty Thursday ™ at the ballpark presented by Hickory Tavern. The Knights will also hold Greek Heritage Night on Thursday.

RHP Erik Johnson (5-6, 6.30) will get the start for the Knights against Pawtucket RHP Steven Wright (5-2, 2.80). Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM, WRHI (94.3 FM and 1340 AM) and online at www.charlotteknights.com.
