Pigs drop opener to Knights

Charlotte plated at least one run in each of the first four innings

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (55-60) couldn't withstand the scoring by the Charlotte Knights (63-53), falling 9-2 Friday night at Coca-Cola Park.

The Knights took a 1-0 lead against JoJo Romero (3-3) in the top of the first inning as Yermin Mercedes hit a sacrifice fly to score Nick Madrigal. Lehigh Valley tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning as Logan Morrison hit a sacrifice fly against Odrisamer Despaigne (6-4) to score Nick Williams.
Paulo Orlando hit a sacrifice fly against Romero in the top of the second inning to score Danny Mendick and give Charlotte a 2-1 lead. The Knights extended their lead to 3-1 in the top of the third inning as Zack Collins hit an RBI single to score Madrigal. Trey Michalczewski hit his third home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning against Romero to give Charlotte a 5-1 lead. Orlando scored on the home run.
The Pigs got a run against Despaigne in the bottom of the fourth inning as Deivy Grullon scored on an RBI groundout by Jose Pirela. Romero left the game after five innings as he allowed five runs (four earned) off five hits and four walks with four strikeouts.
Mercedes hit a three-run home run off Edgar Garcia in the top of the ninth inning to give the Knights an 8-2 lead. The runs snapped a scoreless inning streak of 17 innings for Garica. The right-hander proceeded to give up a home run to Collins in the following at-bat that allowed Charlotte to take a 9-2 lead.
Connor Brogdon pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Romero while Austin Davis recorded four strikeouts in two innings for Lehigh Valley.
