Captains Bounce Back Against Loons

Missed opportunities haunt Great Lakes as series is tied

MIDLAND, Mich. - One night after the Great Lakes Loons had enough firepower to outlast the Lake County Captains, it was the visitors who prevailed 4-2 on Tuesday night at Dow Diamond.
Trenton Brooks was the star of the night as he turned in a three-hit performance atop the Lake County lineup card, while Todd Isaacs blasted his fifth home run of the season and Conner Capel added a two-run triple.
Despite pitching into the 7th inning, Loons starter Devin Smeltzer (L, 2-2) allowed four runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. The lefty has surrendered two or more runs in each of his last four starts for the Loons (17-21) after turning in three consecutive scoreless outings prior to that.
It was in the bottom of the 4th inning when the Loons had the best chance to catapult into the lead when they loaded the bases with nobody out. However, Mitchell Hansen grounded into a double play and Luis Paz grounded out to second base as the Captains (14-23) limited the damage to just one run.
The other run in the ballgame for Great Lakes came courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Gavin Lux after a leadoff triple by Saige Jenco in the 5th. That would be all the Loons could muster against Brady Aiken (W, 1-6) who picked up his first win of the season.
Of the seven Loons hits it was Cody Thomas who had the lone multi-hit game. Thomas and Hansen each also had doubles.
The tandem of Vinny Santarsiero and Angel German continued the strong string of performances from the bullpen as they pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief totaling four strikeouts.
With each team taking a game to begin the series there's all to play for in the finale on Wednesday. It's a School Kids Day pres. MidMichigan Health with a special 10:35 a.m. first pitch.
