COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The Loons avoided a seventh straight loss with a 3-0 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Saturday night before a crowd of over 9,000 at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Great Lakes (21-27; 57-60) avenges a shutout loss on Friday night with its eighth shutout win of the season. West Michigan (34-13; 79-35) fails to score a run in a game for the fifth time this season
Right-hander Chris Mathewson (W, 4-3) tossed seven innings for the third time this season with the Loons and for the third time in his professional career. The 19th-round pick out of Long Beach State in 2016 allowed four hits and four walks. He tied his career high with nine strikeouts.
Ryan Moseley (S, 1) earned his second save in the Dodgers organization. Traded from the Baltimore Orioles in the offseason, the right-hander threw two innings and allowed one hit, one walk and struck out two.
All three of the Loons runs scored in the fourth inning. Dodgers third-round selection Connor Wong drove in the third run of his pro career with a one-out single against lefty starter Eudis Idrogo (L, 6-5), who entered play with the sixth-lowest ERA in the Midwest League.
With two outs later in the inning, Idrogo botched a weak ground ball to the hill off the bat of Nick Yarnall. After an initial struggle to grasp the baseball in the grass, Idrogo threw wildly up the first base line and two runs scored for the Loons on the error.
The Loons' pitching tandem of Mathewson and Moseley scattered five hits throughout the game and did not allow multiple hits in an inning for West Michigan. There were no extra-base hits for either team in the game.
A win in Sunday's series finale salvages a series split for the Loons in their final meeting of the season against West Michigan. First pitch is 1 p.m. with pregame coverage at 12:30 on ESPN 100.9-FM.
The Great Lakes Loons are the 2016 Midwest League Champions and have been a Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2007.
