Loons Nominated for Moss Award

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Midwest League announced their nominations for Minor League Baseball's postseason awards Thursday, including a nomination of the Great Lakes Loons for the John Henry Moss Community Service Award.

The John Henry Moss Community Service Award is presented to a club that demonstrates an outstanding, on-going commitment to charitable service, support and leadership within their local community and within the baseball industry.

"We are honored to be the Midwest League nominee for this award," said Paul Barbeau, Loons President and General Manager. "For most professional sports teams, community service is something they do. For the Loons, community service is why we exist. As a non-profit entity, the Loons strive to run a successful business solely for the purpose of enhancing the quality of life in our region through job creation, vitality and charitable giving."

Minor League Baseball Charities announced the creation of the award, named after long-time South Atlantic League president John Henry Moss, in January 2013. The 2013 winner will be the first recipient of the award.

After nominees from all leagues are reviewed by the MiLB Awards Committee, recommendations are presented to the President and Executive Vice President of MiLB for a final decision. Winners for every MiLB postseason award will be announced at the Baseball Winter Meetings, in December 2013, along with a presentation of the awards at the Winter Meetings.

Since their inception in 2007, the Loons, along with the Michigan Baseball Foundation, have generated regional economic development and enhanced the efforts of regional organizations that serve young people through creative partnerships and grants.

In its 2013 grant class, the Michigan Baseball Foundation (MBF) awarded $105,079 to 30 organizations from nine counties in Mid-Michigan. This year was the sixth consecutive year that the grant total exceeded $100,000. In six years, the MBF grant program has awarded a total of $622,459 to non-profits of Mid-Michigan.
