MIDLAND, Mich. - It was a tightly-contested game throughout between the Great Lakes Loons and Fort Wayne TinCaps on a beautiful 66-degree Monday night at Dow Diamond. But a timely one-out single from Luis Campusano in the eighth inning ultimately gave the visitors a 3-1 win.
The Loons (3-12) had their chances throughout the game, but left 10 runners on base and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. It hasn't been for a lack of offense this season as the team had a .252 batting average entering play Monday. However, this season Great Lakes is batting .206 in RISP situations and just .136 with runners in scoring position and two outs (8-for-59).
Starling Heredia drove in the only run for the Loons in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out single down the right-field line to score Romer Cuadrado. Multi-hit games were turned in by Cuadrado and Moises Perez and they combined to steal three bases.
Campusano led the way for Fort Wayne (7-11) with the lone multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a double and the two-run single in the eighth. Nick Margevicius struck out seven batters in 4.1 innings in his start for the TinCaps. Caleb Boushley (W, 1-0) picked up his first win of the season and allowed two baserunners in 3.2 innings of relief. Travis Radke (SV, 1) tossed a perfect ninth for the save.
In his third start for the Loons this season, Edwin Uceta received a no-decision as he allowed one run on two hits over 5.0 innings. He walked two batters and struck out three. Leo Crawford (L, 0-1), in his first appearance back with the Loons this season, had a solid relief appearance apart from the at-bat against Campusano. The native of Nicaragua allowed two runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of work, which included three strikeouts. Zach Pop pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Both teams return to the field on Tuesday night in Midland for the second game of a four-game set. Jesus Vargas (1-0, 1.13 ERA) will make the start for the Loons. Local product Aaron Leasher (1-0, 2.51) from Mount Pleasant, Mich., will take the mound for the TinCaps. Leasher, 21, was a sixth-round pick by the San Diego Padres last summer out of Morehead State.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
