LOWELL, MA - The Spinners (31-27) pulled within 1.5 games of the division-leading Tri-City ValleyCats (33-26) with after a late rally carried them to a 9-3 victory.
Tri-City struck first off of starter Chris Machamer in the top of the second. In four innings he struck out two, walked a pair, three hits, and an earned run.
Lowell struck back in the bottom of the fourth when Devlin Granberg hit his fourth home run of the season on a solo shot to tie the game at one. After a pair of walks from Lane Milligan and Dylan Hardy, Alberto Schmidt singled to left field to bring in Milligan, giving the Spinners a 2-1 lead.
Tri-City tied game in the top of the sixth off of Francisco Lopez-Soto. The bullpen then locked down the ValleyCats for the rest of the evening with four scoreless innings from Danny Bethea, Alex Demchak, and Kris Jackson.
A seven-run eighth inning put this one away for Lowell. Dylan Hardy was hit by a pitch then Schmidt moved him over to third with a single. Jonathan Ortega walked to load the bases and a Grant Williams single brought in two runs for the Spinners. Devlin Granberg later drove in two more runs with a single and Tyler Esplin brought in two more with a double. Esplin would score the final run of the evening on a Lane Milligan triple to make it 9-2.
With the victory, the Spinners go for the sweep on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 5:35 p.m. Left-hander Yorvin Pantoja takes the hill for the Spinners.
