The Lynchburg Hillcats kept pace with the top of the Carolina League with their 4-3 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Thursday evening.

Lynchburg led from start to finish but the Shorebirds cut things close late in the ballgame before Jay Driver picked up his first professional save. The win kept them two games behind the Carolina Mudcats for first place in the North Division.

Jose Devers drove home the first run of the ballgame in the first inning thanks to a bases loaded walk. Guy Lipscomb would extend the lead with a fielder’s choice ground out to put the Hillcats in front by 2.

Delmarva would get a run back in the third inning as Matthew Etzel would drive home Mac Horvath with a sacrifice fly. However, Lynchburg would match it on a Lipscomb triple to plate Maick Collado. For Lipscomb, it was his first triple of the season.

In the bottom of the fifth, Collado would add to the lead with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

Then in the seventh inning, Delmarva would creep a little bit closer. Horvath would drive home a run on a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Matthew Etzel would drive home another run on a ground ball that hit off the pitcher, cutting the deficit to one.

However, the Hillcats bullpen would hold strong in the final two innings as Lynchburg picked up their second straight win, and their 10th in 12 ballgames.

Lynchburg and Delmarva would face off again on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Bank of the James Stadium.
