Tyler Lyons Hurls Eight Scoreless In Redbirds 3-0 Win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tyler Lyons struck out six over a season-high eight shutout innings to lead the Memphis Redbirds to a 3-0 win over the visiting Round Rock Express on Monday night at AutoZone Park.
With the win, the Redbirds ended a three-game losing skid and avoided their first four-game series sweep in nearly two seasons.
Lyons continued his success again the Express, moving to 5-1 with a 0.86 ERA (4er/42.0ip) and 40 strikeouts over six career starts since 2012.
The Redbirds left-hander scattered six hits and walked one as the Redbirds turned three double plays over his eight frames.
Memphis third baseman Ty Kelly (1-for-3) hit his first home run of the season that gave the Redbirds a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, a line drive just beyond the right field wall.
The Redbirds moved ahead at 3-0 in the seventh as catcher Ed Easley drove home two more with a two-out, two-run single to center. All 11 of Easley's RBI this season have come with two outs.
Pitcher Sam Tuivalala recorded his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
Round Rock starter Chi Chi Gonzalez (1-3) tossed a quality start in the loss, allowing two runs over 6 2/3 innings.
After a league-wide off day on Wednesday, the Redbirds travel to The Big Easy on Thursday for a four-game series against the division-rival New Orleans Zephyrs (Triple-A Marlins). The Redbirds return to AutoZone Park on Monday, May 4 for an eight-game homestand against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Triple-A Brewers) and New Orleans Zephyrs (Triple-A Marlins).
