BayBears grill Shrimp with five runs in eighth inning

Triunfel drives in three, Karch earns second win in relief

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (April 27, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, scored seven unanswered runs to come from behind and earn an 8-3 victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in the series opener Thursday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

With the game tied 3-3, the BayBears (11-10) exploded for five runs on two hits and three walks in the eighth inning. Alberto Triunfel hit a two-run double, and Zach Welz followed with a two-run single. Mobile sent all nine batters to the plate in the inning.

Eric Karch (2-1) extended his scoreless streak to 14 2/3 consecutive innings. He kept Jacksonville (7-14) off the board in the seventh and eighth to earn his second win of the season. Eduardo Paredes finished the game by working around a ninth-inning single and striking out the side.

Jacksonville starter Severino Gonzalez recorded a quality start, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits in six innings pitched. He did not factor in the decision. Victor Payano (0-1) pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings but took the loss for the Jumbo Shrimp, giving up two runs, one earned, and walking two batters.

Tyler Carpenter lasted just three innings for Mobile in his shortest start of the season. He gave up three runs on six hits, including a first-inning homer by Brian Anderson. It was the first home run allowed by Carpenter in his last 31 innings pitched.

Thursday marked the fifth time the BayBears have won when being out-hit by the opposing team. With the victory, Mobile improved to 3-0 in series openers on the road.

The BayBears continue the five-game road series Friday at 6:05 p.m. CT against Jacksonville. Right-hander Alex Klonowski (1-1, 3.48 ERA) is slated to make the start against southpaw Matt Tomshaw (2-1, 3.05 ERA) for the Jumbo Shrimp.
