MOBILE, Ala. (June 23, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, won both games of a doubleheader Friday night against the Tennessee Smokies at Hank Aaron Stadium.
After falling behind 2-0 early, the BayBears plated the final three runs to defeat Tennessee in walk-off fashion.
With two runners on and one out in the seventh, David Fletcher hit an infield to second base. David Bote misplayed the ground ball, allowing Michael Hermosillo to score the winning run for the BayBears.
Bo Way went 2-for-3 in the game and played a critical role in Mobile's comeback. Way doubled and scored the first run of the game on a Forrestt Allday sacrifice fly in the third, cutting the Tennessee lead in half. Then, Way's RBI single tied the game in the fifth.
Charcer Burks began the game with a solo home run on the fourth pitch of the night from Jake Jewell . Jewell allowed just one more run in the third, as he settled in and lasted 5 1/3 innings. Greg Mahle (1-0) earned the win in relief, retiring all five batters he faced.
The BayBears (32-39 overall, 2-0 second half) needed just one run to defeat Tennessee (36-35, 0-2) in the second game of the doubleheader.
Jaime Barria (1-1) pitched his first career complete game and shut out the Smokies. He allowed a double in each of the first two innings before recording 17 straight outs to end the night. Barria did not issue a walk, and he struck out six batters.
Preston Morrison (0-7) blanked the BayBears for the first five innings, but he was finally tagged for a run in the bottom of the sixth. Josè Briceño drove in Fletcher with a single down the third base line to break the scoreless tie.
The BayBears continue the five-game home series against Tennessee Saturday at 7:05 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Osmer Morales (3-2, 3.88 ERA) is slated to make the start against righty Trevor Clifton (5-3, 2.84 ERA) for the Smokies.
