BILOXI, Miss. (May 30, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning and never looked back, defeating the Biloxi Shuckers 7-3 in the series opener Tuesday night at MGM Park.
Six players had two-hit games, as Mobile (24-27) fell just one hit shy of its season-high. David Fletcher went 2-for-5 with a two-run triple and two runs scored. Zach Houchins notched his team-high 13th multi-hit game of the season and drove in two runs.
Alex Blackford (1-2) recorded a quality start, allowing three seventh-inning runs on five hits in a season-high 6 1/3 innings pitched. He did not issue a walk and struck out a season-high six batters. After Blackford departed, Brandon Peterson and Eric Karch combined to strike out the final six batters of the game.
The BayBears scored three runs in the first inning off Biloxi (26-25) starter Jorge López (3-3) on a Josè Briceño RBI double and Houchins' two-run single. Michael Hermosillo 's RBI single in the sixth increased the lead to 4-0. Then, Fletcher followed with his two-run triple and came home on a throwing error. All seven of the BayBears runs were scored with two outs.
Forrestt Allday went 2-for-4 with a walk, extending his on-base streak to 32 games. It is the longest active streak in the Southern League.
The BayBears continue the five-game road series against Biloxi Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. CT. Right-hander Grayson Long (3-2, 2.43 ERA) is slated to make the start against righty Angel Ventura (1-4, 2.75 ERA) for the Shuckers.
