2018 BAYBEARS COACHING STAFF ANNOUNCED
Former Major Leaguer Lou Marson takes the helm in the second season with the Angels
MOBILE, AL - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the parent club of the Mobile BayBears, has named the organization's player development staff for the 2018 season. This is the second year of a two-year PDC agreement between the Angels and the Mobile franchise.
Former major leaguer and second year coach, Lou Marson, will be the Manager for the BayBears in 2018. Marson broke into coaching last season as the Hitting Coach for the Salt Lake Bees, the Triple-A Affiliate of the Angels. Marson spent six seasons as a Major League player for the Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Indians before signing a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels in 2016 where he would then retire and enter into coaching. Marson led the Salt Lake Bees to finish second in team batting average at a clip of .290 in the Pacific Coast league in 2017. The Bees also finished with the league's lowest total strikeouts (896), the most walks (560), and the highest on-base-percentage (.365) in the PCL.
Joining Marson's staff this season will be Hitting Coach Lee Tinsley, Pitching Coach Pat Rice, Strength Coach Dylan Cintula, and Defensive Coach Travis Adair. Athletic Trainer Matt Morrell will be returning after serving in the same role for the BayBears in 2017.
Pat Rice will continue his long coaching career as the BayBears Pitching Coach in 2018. Rice is a former Major League pitcher and has spent time coaching in the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, and Angels organizations. Since the 2015 season, Rice served time as the Pitching Coordinator for the entire Angels farm system.
Lee Tinsley made his coaching debut as the Hitting Coach for the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks Double-A Affiliate, El Paso Diablos. Since then, the former Major League outfielder served as a coach in the Angels, Mariners, and Cubs systems before becoming the Assistant Hitting Coach for the Cincinnati Reds in 2014.
In 2018, the Angels will add a new Defensive Coach position to the staff, which will be filled by Travis Adair. Adair enters into his third year of coaching, which began in 2014 for the Hickory Crawdads. Travis spent last season as the hitting coach for the Angels Single-A Affiliate Burlington Bees.
Rounding out the BayBears field staff, along with returning Athletic Trainer Matt Morrell, will be Strength and Conditioning Coach Dylan Cintula, who is entering his first season with the Angels after spending time as the Assistant Strength Coach for the University of Louisiana of Lafayette.
The BayBears 2018 season begins at home on April 5 at 6:35pm with a five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
