Top prospects on 2013 Mud Hens roster!

The Toledo Mud Hens open their 2013 campaign on Thursday, April 4 in Louisville.  The team's opening nine-day homestand kicks off on Thursday, April 11 at 5 p.m. against the Louisville Bats.

Manager Phil Nevin is back at the helm; this is his third season in Toledo.  He guided the Mud Hens to a 60-84 record in 2012. Rounding out the field staff are Hitting Coach Leon "Bull" Durham (13th season), Pitching Coach A.J. Sager (sixth season), Athletic Trainer Matt Rankin (13th season), and Strength Coach Kyle Bergman (third season).

The Mud Hens opening day roster includes an impressive mix of top prospects and season veterans. Fans will recognize many familiar faces - 15 players on the 2013 roster have played with the Hens before!

Let's take a closer look:

  • OF Nick Castellanos is the Tigers' top prospect according to Baseball America after hitting .405 with Lakeland last season.
  • Duane Below returns to Toledo for his third season at the Triple-A level.  The left-handed pitcher grew up in nearby Britton, MI.  He earned his first major league win on April 7, 2012 versus Boston.
  • The Mud Hens youngest player is Nick Castellanos (21) and the oldest is John Lindsey (36).
  • Toledo has players from four different countries- Canada, Dominican Republic, United States, and Venezuela.
  • Fifteen players on the Opening Day roster have played for the Mud Hens prior to this season.
