Outfielder becomes 11th former Pelican to make MLB debut in 2017

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (September 11, 2017) - Former Myrtle Beach Pelicans outfielder Jacob Hannemann made his major league debut Saturday with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. Hannemann is the 11th former Myrtle Beach farmhand to make his big league debut in 2017, and including recent MLB rehabber Willson Contreras , the 167th Pelicans alumnus to play in The Show.

A native of Orem, Utah, Hannemann went 0-for-1 in a pinch-hit appearance Saturday in Seattle's 8-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

The Chicago Cubs' third-round pick in 2013 out of Brigham Young University, Hannemann began the 2015 season in the Grand Strand. Over 16 games with the Pelicans, he batted .328/.388/.393 with four doubles, four RBIs and seven stolen bases, earning a promotion to Double-A Tennessee. 

Afer hitting .247/.326/.426 with 14 doubles, four triples, 10 homers, 30 RBIs and 25 steals with the Smokies in 2016, Hannemann was added to the Cubs' 40-man roster in November. This season, he slashed .240/.312/.372 with 32 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 32 RBIs and 29 swipes in 114 games between Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa before the Mariners claimed him off waivers on September 4.

Hannemann joins utility players Drew Robinson (Texas) and Chris Bostick (Pittsburgh), left-handed pitcher Chad Bell (Detroit), infielder/outfielder Ian Happ (Cubs), outfielders Lewis Brinson (Milwaukee), Mark Zagunis (Cubs), Nick Williams (Philadelphia), catcher Victor Caratini (Cubs) and right-handed pitchers Paul Blackburn (Oakland) and Dillon Maples (Cubs) as former Myrtle Beach farmhands to make their big league debut this season.
