Peter O'Brien hit two home runs and Dillon Peters pitched seven strong innings as the New Orleans Baby Cakes beat the Memphis Redbirds, 4-2 on Monday night.
New Orleans has won eight of its last nine games, including five straight on the road, to move within three games of the .500 mark for the first time since July 1.
Cristhian Adames provided the 'Cakes with an early lead, delivering an RBI single to cash in Braxton Lee's double to lead off the game.
The Baby Cakes had gone the entire season without a multi-homer game until Austin Dean went deep twice on Saturday, and O'Brien quickly added his name to the list, slugging a solo shot in the fourth inning and a two-run blast in the sixth to put New Orleans in front, 4-1.
Peters owned a 12.58 ERA in seven road starts entering Monday night, but limited the Redbirds to two runs and eight hits while equaling season highs with seven strikeouts and seven innings pitched. With a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Peters (4-7) gave up three consecutive hits, including an RBI single to Alex Mejia, but induced an inning-ending double play from Ramon Urias to preserve the lead.
Memphis again threatened in the seventh, when Urias led off with a single and scored on a double by Randy Arozarena to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs, but Peters settled in to retire the next three batters to end his outing.
Jose Quijada got a double play grounder to end the eighth inning after a one-out single by Carson Kelly, and Jumbo Diaz set down the Redbirds in order in the ninth to pick up his team-leading 10th save.
Kevin Herget (8-9) struck out eight without issuing a walk in seven innings, but took the loss after surrendering four runs on six hits.
The Baby Cakes look to extend their road winning streak to a season-best six games in the second game of the series on Tuesday. First pitch at AutoZone Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
