Baby Cakes clobbered in Colorado

Wearing the throwback uniforms of the Colorado Springs Millionaires, the Sky Sox looked like a million bucks in their home opener on Tuesday night, cruising to an 8-1 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes.
Dressed as the city's 1916 Western League franchise, Colorado Springs pounced on 'Cakes starter Adam Conley for four runs and chased the left-hander from the game after only five outs. Conley uncorked a wild pitch to score Mauricio Dubon from third base in the opening frame, then walked opposing pitcher Freddy Peralta with the bases loaded in the second to force in another run.
Conley nearly escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts of Keon Broxton and Dubon, but Ji-Man Choi laced a two-run single to stretch the Colorado Springs lead to 4-0 and end Conley's outing.
Conley (0-2) has surrendered 11 earned runs in 4 2/3 innings over his first two starts, while the rest of the Baby Cakes pitching staff has allowed only 12 earned runs combined.
The Sky Sox added three more runs in the fourth on home runs by Broxton and Christian Bethancourt, and Nate Orf tacked on an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth after New Orleans had broken up the shutout in the top half on a triple by Rafael Ortega and a double by J.B. Shuck.
Peralta (2-0) eased through five innings, racking up seven strikeouts with two hits allowed, and has begun the season with 10 consecutive scoreless innings over a pair of victories.
New Orleans saw its four-game winning streak snapped, and had won each of its last four road openers prior to Tuesday.
The three-game series resumes on Wednesday at 7:40 p.m. Baby Cakes right-hander Zac Gallen looks to follow up his six shutout innings in his season debut, and will face Sky Sox righty Brandon Woodruff, making his first start of 2018.
