Austin Dean and Harold Ramirez had back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth inning, and the New Orleans Baby Cakes capitalized on an Iowa error with the bases loaded in the seventh to plate the wining run and spoil the Cubs' home opener on Tuesday night, 4-3.
Dean has hit safely in each of the season's first six games and in 15 of his last 16 games with New Orleans dating back to 2018.
Bryan Holaday reached base three times, and doubled home the Baby Cakes' first run in the second inning to erase an early 1-0 Iowa advantage.
The Cubs briefly regained the lead on an Ian Happ RBI double in the fifth, until Dean and Ramirez responded an inning later. In the bottom of the sixth, Iowa tied the score at 3-3 on an error by 'Cakes reliever Mike Kickham.
Despite suffering the fourth blown save by the New Orleans bullpen, Kickham (1-0) was credited with the victory by working two innings in relief of starter Elieser Hernandez, who allowed two runs and four hits in five innings. Hernandez fanned six and walked two.
Jose Quijada notched four strikeouts while holding Iowa without a hit over the final two innings to pick up his second save.
Dillon Maples (0-1) walked three and hit a batter in the seventh inning and was charged with the loss.
The Baby Cakes defeated the Cubs in Iowa's home opener for the second time in three seasons and evened their record at 3-3.
The three-game set continues on Wednesday at 6:38 p.m.
