The New Orleans Baby Cakes piled up a season-high 21 hits and defeated the Albuquerque Isotopes, 15-6 on Tuesday afternoon to complete a four-game sweep.
All 21 hits came in the first seven innings, putting within reach the franchise record of 25, set in 2007 at Iowa. But the Baby Cakes were retired in order in each of the last two frames, settling for their most hits in a game since May 6, 2013, also at Isotopes Park.
New Orleans recorded its fourth series sweep of the season, and its second straight in Albuquerque, giving them eight consecutive wins in an opposing ballpark for the first time since 2001-02 in Nashville. The club record is nine straight wins in a road venue, established in 1993 in Oklahoma City.
The Baby Cakes left little doubt to the outcome on Tuesday, as the first four batters of the game singled for a quick 2-0 lead, and Tomas Telis drove in two more with a single, the first of his four hits. Telis pushed past Brad Davis for the third-most hits by a catcher in franchise history with 169, trailing only Raul Chavez and Mitch Meluskey.
More records fell when Rafael Ortega tripled off the right field fence in the second inning, moments after Austin Dean homered to give the 'Cakes a 5-0 cushion. It was the ninth three-bagger of the year for Ortega, a new single-season team mark, and he was not yet done as he added another triple in the seventh as part of a four-hit afternoon. Ortega finished with 10 hits over the final three games of the series.
Handed a five-run lead, Dillon Peters allowed a home run to Jordan Patterson in the second and a grand slam to Mike Tauchman in the third as Albuquerque rallied to briefly knot the score. But the 'Cakes responded with a pair of runs in the fourth when Cristhian Adames stroked an RBI double and scored on a single by J.B. Shuck.
Shuck, the reigning PCL Player of the Week, chipped in the ninth multi-hit effort in his last 11 starts and is batting .482 over his last 16 contests.
Peter O'Brien helped put the game out of reach with a pinch hit, three-run homer to highlight a five-run seventh inning.
Peters (3-7) was charged with six runs on eight hits in six innings but managed to record his first road victory in seven attempts this season. Odrisamer Despaigne blanked the Isotopes over the final three innings and was credited with his second save.
David Holmberg (5-6) gave up 15 hits and eight runs in 4 1/3 innings and took the loss for Albuquerque.
Following a day off on Wednesday, the Baby Cakes return home to host the Iowa Cubs in a four-game series beginning Thursday at 7 p.m.
