Where Are They Now: Steve Lerud

December 18, 2012
The Baysox have completed their 20th season, and during that time, hundreds of players have come through Bowie. Some have stopped in for just a few weeks and others have been here for years before moving on with their careers. During the offseason, check back to baysox.com to find out where some of those players are now.

Catcher Steve Lerud was drafted out of high school by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the third round of the 2003 First Year Player Draft. In 2004, he played 48 games with the Gulf Coast Pirates, hitting .246 before being promoted to Single-A Hickory for the 2005 season.

The Nevada native suffered a broken hand in 2005 and a broken foot in 2006, but was promoted to Advanced-A Lynchburg in 2007 where he was able to play in 84 games. Lerud experienced his best Minor League season in 2008, hitting a combined .247 with 12 home runs and 58 RBI in 114 games between Lynchburg and Double-A Altoona. He was added to the Pirates 40 man roster at the end of the season, but after the 2009 season, he became a free agent and was signed by the Kansas City Royals.

Shortly after signing with the Royals, Lerud was traded to the Baltimore Orioles for the 2010 season. He spent most of the season with the Baysox, where he hit .203 in 49 games. He returned to the Baysox in 2011 and played in 73 games primarily as the back-up catcher.

Lerud became a free agent at the end of the 2011 season and he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. He started the 2012 season with Double-A Reading, but he was promoted to the Phillies in August where he made his Major League debut August 30. In three games with the Phillies, Lerud recorded two hits and scored one run.
