Where Are They Now: Jim Hoey

January 8, 2013
The Baysox 20th season at Prince George's Stadium is just around the corner. During the past 19 years, hundreds of players have come through Bowie - some have stopped in for just a few weeks and others have been here for years before moving on with their careers. During the offseason, check back to baysox.com to find out where some of those players are now.

Right-handed pitcher Jim Hoey was drafted by the Orioles in the 13th round of the 2003 First Year Player draft out of Rider University in New Jersey. He pitched in 11 games with Rookie level Bluefield in 2003, but made just two starts in 2004 before ending his season and undergoing Tommy John surgery.

After recovering from the surgery, Hoey was able to return and pitch in nine games with Short Season-A Aberdeen in 2005 before making a full return in 2006 where he appeared in 49 games across three levels. He was promoted to Bowie in August and he recorded four saves in eight games before making his Major League debut August 23, 2006. At the end of the season, he was named the Orioles Organizational Pitcher of the Year.

Hoey continued his success in 2007. He started the season in Bowie and did not allow an earned run in 20 appearances before being promoted to Triple-A Norfolk and eventually back to Baltimore. Hoey pitched in a total of 35 games in Baltimore between the 2006 and 2007 seasons before missing the entire 2008 season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

After shoulder surgery, Hoey returned to Bowie for most of the next two years. During his four seasons with the Baysox, Hoey pitched in a total of 88 games and went 5-6 with a 3.28 ERA. After the 2010 season, Hoey and fellow pitcher Brett Jacobson were sent to the Minnesota Twins in the trade that brought J.J. Hardy to Baltimore.

Hoey began the 2011 season with Triple-A Rochester, but also pitched in 26 games for the Twins, going 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA in 24.2 innings. After the 2011 season, Hoey was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays. He spent this past year pitching with Triple-A Las Vegas, where he appeared in 46 games. After becoming a free agent at the end of the 2012 season, Hoey signed with the Milwaukee Brewers where he will pitch in 2013.
