JUPITER, Fla. - Clark Beeker tossed 7.2 scoreless innings to lead the Fort Myers Miracle over the Palm Beach Cardinals, 3-0, on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Beeker (2-4), whose longest outing of the season had been six innings, threw just 91 pitches (65 strikes). He retired 10 of the first 11 hitters he faced and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. The right-hander walked one and struck out three.
Andrew Vasquez picked up his fifth save by striking out all four batters he faced to close out the game. The All-Star left-hander was summoned with two on and two out in the eighth to face clean up hitter Johan Mieses and got him swinging to end Palm Beach's last threat.
Left fielder Shane Carrier made two terrific defensive plays in the eighth inning. On the first, he tracked down a deep fly ball in the corner, crashed into the wall and hung on. Later in the frame, Carrier threw out a runner at the plate to preserve the shutout.
The Miracle took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Jaylin Davis. They made it 3-0 in the seventh when Luis Arraez delivered a two-run double. Palm Beach was anticipating a bunt with runners on first and second and nobody out, but Arraez swung away. He came into the game hitting .500 over his past eight contests.
The win was the fourth shutout of the season for the Miracle.
The four-game series continues on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Right-hander Griffin Jax (0-0) will start for the Miracle against left-hander Ian Oxnevad (3-5). First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
