Bunnell’s big hit earns Jackets first series victory

North Augusta, SC – With two outs in the seventh and eighth innings on Sunday, the Augusta GreenJackets came up clutch. In the 8th, Cade Bunnell drove in two with the single, and the Jackets beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Chicago Cubs) by a final score of 4-2.

The Jackets win their first series of the 2021 season and improve to 17-19. They finish the 12-game homestand with a record of 7-5.

Augusta scored first. In the first inning, with two outs, Bunnellscored from second base on a Willie Carter single. It was 1-0 Augusta. The GreenJackets outhit Myrtle Beach 12-4 on Sunday.

Darius Vines took the mound for the first time since he was named Low-A East Pitcher of the Week, and was great again. Vines went six innings and allowed just one run. He’d strikeout eight and allow only two hits. Myrtle Beach scored off Vines in the 2nd Luis Verdugo on first, and two outs, Stephen Paolini dove for a baseball off the bat of Ryan Reynolds and it got by him and rolled to the wall. Verdugo scored and it was tied at one.

In the seventh inning, Pablo Aliendo went deep to make it a 2-1 lead for Myrtle Beach. The Jackets came back with a run in the home half though. A two out double from Vaughn Grissom *followed up by a *Landon Stephens** triple, and we were tied at two.

In the 8th inning, it was more two out magic. Singles from Victor De Hoyos and Cody Birdsong. It was followed by a walk from Connor Blair. It was Cade Bunnell to deliver a single and make it 4-2 Jackets.

In the 9th inning, Justin Yeager slammed the door, and picked up his 4th win of the season.

NOTES:

• Vaughn Grissom extended his hitting streak to seven games.
• Cody Birdsong had his second multi-hit game of the season
• Darius Vines lowered his ERA to 2.10.
