DAVENPORT, IA (August 7, 2019) - Peyton Burdick slashed a pair of doubles and drove home two runs in a Clinton LumberKings 4-3 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park on Wednesday night. The Clinton (26-19, 59-55) loss - in combination with a Timber Rattlers win - has trimmed their lead in the Wild Card to a single game.
For the first time over his last three starts, LumberKings starter Josh Roberson received some run support but was still hung with the loss.
Quad Cities (25-20, 68-43) struck first in the second inning and then held on for the rest of the night. All of the runs in the second came on one swing of the bat by Wilyer Abreu - a three-run homer that was his first of the year.
The River Bandits added their final run of the night in the bottom of the third. Oscar Campos followed a Cesar Salazar walk with an RBI double that quickly made it 4-0 Quad Cities.
The runs were enough to hang Roberson (1-3) with the loss. He allowed four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three over his six innings of work.
Luis De Paula (1-0) earned the win for Quad Cities for two innings of relief work. He allowed no runs on two hits while walking one and striking out four.
Clinton's runs came late, finally pushing across their first run in the top of the sixth inning. Peyton Burdick opened the inning with the first of his two doubles on a ground ball back of the bag of first. Two batters later, J.D. Osborne plated the run with an RBI single to left center field.
An inning later - in the top of the seventh - Clinton brought home another two runs to pull to within one. Burdick, with his second double of the game, brought home both runs but would end the inning stranded at third base.
The LumberKings had just one more base runner reach for the night with Lupe Chavez earning the save - his first of the year - for a four inning outing.
The LumberKings will meet the Quad Cities River Bandits for game two of their three-game series on Thursday night. Clinton will throw righty Remey Reed (2-0, 1.14) while Quad Cities will tap lefty Jonathan Bermudez (4-0, 3.45). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. (CDT).
