BURLINGTON, IA (June 9, 2019) - For the first time since June 1st, 1999 the Clinton LumberKings suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Burlington Bees. The LumberKings (30-22) fell in game one 3-4 and then came back in two and lost 1-2 to the Bees (36-27) despite Connor Scott's three stolen base performance.
GAME ONE
The theme of free base runners via walks issued continued in game one of the doubleheader. Clinton scored their first two runs without the benefit of a hit, instead turning five walks, over the first two innings, into two runs.
Burlington scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the first on a D.C. Arendas RBI single high off the wall in right. Arendas was thrown out trying to stretch his single into a double and would be the only Bees hit through the first three innings.
The LumberKings took their largest lead of the game in the top of the third. Connor Scott walked to open the frame and scored two batters later on a J.D. Osborne RBI single to left.
Nathan Alexander came on in relief of George Soriano and was hung with the loss. He allowed two runs in the bottom of the eighth with the LumberKings leading by one.
Alexander (3-3) walked two Bees batters in the inning to bring the LumberKings total for walks issued to seven.
With the bases loaded, and nobody out, a line drive was hit to Marcos Rivera at shortstop who let the ball go through him for an error that brought home the tying run. Alvaro Rubalcaba was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the decisive run.
Luke Lind (2-0) earned the win for Burlington with four innings of work. He allowed just two hits and walked none while striking out five.
GAME TWO
Clinton again was the first team to score when the teams met in the second contest of the day. Connor Scott was hit by a pitch from Bees starter Hector Yan to open the game. Scott then stole second and third to begin an outing in which he stole a professional career high three bases. Will Banfield forced him home on an RBI ground out to second.
Yan (1-2) allowed no more runs over his five innings of work on his way to striking out 12 to tie a season-high for strikeouts by an opposing pitcher against LumberKings batters. He was given the win for his time, allowing three hits while walking two.
Burlington tied the game in the bottom of the first when Francisco Del Valle homered to right field for his third of the year, and second against LumberKings pitching.
Tyler Jones allowed the big fly but was sharp in just his second start of the season. He was given the loss when he allowed the game's decisive run to score in the bottom of the third on a Nonie Williams RBI single to left.
Jones (1-3) turned in five innings, his longest outing of the year, surrendered five hits while walking two and striking out four.
Mayky Perez came on in relief of Yan and earned his second save of the season. He allowed no runs on one hit while walking none and striking out three.
The LumberKings will meet the Burlington Bees for the fifth and final game of their five-game series on Monday night. Clinton will throw RHP Jake Walters (0-1, 5.56) while the Bees will go with righty Cole Duensing (5-2, 4.40). Fans who cannot make it to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call at 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio app. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
