CLINTON IA (July 26, 2019) - The Clinton LumberKings concluded their series with the Kane County Cougars falling 5-3 on Friday night at NelsonCorp Field, and dropping two games back of first place. The Cougars (23-10, 58-44) sweep was the first in their franchise history of the LumberKings (21-12, 54-48) in Clinton.
As was the case the night before, the game was decided by a Cougars four-run rally.
In the top of the second, Kane County broke a scoreless tie when they sent nine men to the plate against Clinton starter George Soriano. Tim Susnara plated the first two runs with a single to right and four batters later Tra Holmes added a two-run single to cap the rally.
The inning was enough to hang Soriano (3-7) with the loss. He turned in a three-inning performance in which he allowed four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out three.
The LumberKings answered the rally in the bottom of the second. J.D. Osborne doubled to open the inning and scored when Clinton loaded the bases and a wild pitch brought him home. The inning was one of two LumberKings rallies on the night that could have been much bigger as they would strand the bases loaded twice.
Trailing 5-1, the LumberKings moved to within two in the bottom of the seventh. Christopher Torres reached on a fielder's choice and was followed two batters later by a Peyton Burdick home run high off the scoreboard in left center - his fourth home run of the year.
Ryan Miller (4-5) earned the win for Kane County as Clinton would not score again. He worked one inning of relief and did not allow a run on two hits while walking one and striking out one.
The LumberKings will now hit the road for a seven-game trip that opens on Saturday night with the first of three games with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Clinton will throw righty Josh Roberson (1-0, 2.45) while Cedar Rapids will tap righty Kai-Wei Teng (3-0, 1.85). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. (CDT).
