Deivi Garcia struck out a career-high 15 batters over six scoreless innings and received ample run support in a 6-0 Thunder win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Tuesday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.
The win clinched the first-half Eastern Division title for the Thunder (38-27), who will have home-field advantage in the Eastern Division Championship Series.
Garcia (3-2) struck out the first eight batters he faced and did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning, when Joneshwy Fargas led off by reaching on a third-strike wild pitch. The right-hander held Richmond (23-44) hitless until Gio Brusa connected on a two-out double to right-center in the fifth.
Garcia's 15 strikeouts matched a Thunder franchise record for an individual; Adam Warren struck out 15 Bowie Baysox hitters on August 18, 2010.
The Thunder opened the scoring in the third inning when Wendell Rijo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing home a run. Ben Ruta followed with a sacrifice fly to deep right field, and Chris Gittens added an RBI-single for a 3-0 lead off Flying Squirrels starter Garrett Williams (1-7).
In the fourth, Zack Zehner hit an RBI-triple and scored on a Rashad Crawford single, and Gittens capped the scoring in the seventh with an RBI-double off the right field wall.
Brooks Kriske, Domingo Acevedo, and Daniel Alvarez each tossed an inning of scoreless relief to secure the win. The four Thunder pitchers combined on a season-high 19 strikeouts in the game.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against the Flying Squirrels.
