Milone masters Mud Hens
Tommy Milone struck out 12 in eight innings, and Wilkin Ramirez scored the game's only run as the Rochester Red Wings beat the Toledo Mud Hens 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at Frontier Field.
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies) open a four-game set here on Thursday night, another Fan 4-Pack Night with four tickets, hot dogs, drinks and a yearbook for $36 ($40 day of game). Complete promotion details below...
Milone made his second start since being optioned by the Twins May 1, and was coming off an eight-strikeout win May 8 in Louisville. Milone struck out the side in a 15-pitch first inning Wednesday. Milone's mound opponent, Kyle Ryan, also pitched May 8 and had his best outing of the season (7 innings, 2 earned runs).
Through three scoreless innings, Milone had fanned seven of the nine batters he had faced; Ryan had allowed a pair of singles, to Nate Hanson and Argenis Diaz, along with a walk.
Xavier Avery, the Hens' top hitter with a .364 average coming into the game, singled to open the fourth inning against Milone. But Milone retired the next three batters, striking out clean-up hitter Mike Hessman for the third out.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Wings could not capitalize after consecutive singles from Eric Fryer and Danny Ortiz with one out.
The game was still scoreless as play moved into the seventh inning. Milone struck out two, running his total to 11 for the game. In the bottom of the seventh, Ramirez hit a one-out triple for the best scoring opportunity of the day for either club. With the infield in, third baseman Corey Jones couldn't handle Jose Martinez' grounder, with Ramirez scoring on the fielding error for a 1-0 Rochester lead. Hanson singled to move Martinez to third base, and that brought Ryan Perry out of the bullpen for Toledo. Perry got a double play grounder to limit the damage.
Ryan (0-4) worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and an earned run. He walked two, struck out four, and threw 97 pitches - 60 for strikes.
Steven Moya led off the eighth with a single, putting the tying run on base against Milone. With a full count on Josh Wilson, Milone picked Moya off first base, then got a groundout from Wilson. Milone struck out Jones for the the third out, running his strikeout total to 12.
Milone (2-0) was brilliant over eight innings, allowing just three hits with no walks and 12 strikeouts. Milone threw 98 pitches, 70 for strikes.
A.J. Achter pitched the ninth inning, and quickly set down the first two batters he faced. Dixon Machado singled, then moved to second on a wild pitch to put the tying run in scoring position. Achter struck out Daniel Fields for the final out, and recorded his third save.
NOTES: Tommy Milone made his third appearance at Frontier Field Wednesday, but first as a Wing. He pitched a total of 15 scoreless innings over two starts with Syracuse in 2011...Red Wings RHP Stephen Pryor (torn left meniscus) has been placed on the disabled list...Twins Director of Minor League Operations Brad Steil is in town to see the Wings play...RHP Jose Berrios pitched a complete game two-hit shutout Thursday afternoon as Double-A Chattanooga beat Birminghanm 3-0. Berrios walked two and struck out eight to improve his record to 4-1, and lower his season ERA to 2.60. |

1976-Starters Mike Willis and Fred Holdsworth both threw complete game victories in the Red Wings' double-header sweep of the Pawtucket Red Sox. In between games, fans were entertained by 71-year old high wire walker Karl Wallenda as he walked high over the playing field at Silver Stadium.
1988 - Maine and Pawtucket play host to the first interleague games of the new Triple-A Alliance. Ten years before the Major Leagues would adopt the practice, the International League and American Association agree to have each of their clubs play a total of 42 regular season games against members of the opposite league. (Facing the prospect of a difficult and expensive travel schedule, the Pacific Coast League chose not to participate in the Alliance.) The plan is designed to give fans a chance to see Triple-A players from 16 organizations instead of 8. The idea for interleague play becomes reality on May 13, 1988 with a pair of victories for the IL clubs. Pawtucket defeats Oklahoma City 4-2 at McCoy Stadium, while the Maine Guides squeak by Denver 4-3.
