June 22, 2015

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (JUNE 22, 2015) - In conjunction with Minor League Baseball, the Carolina League announced its Players of the Week on Monday, naming Myrtle Beach Pelicans outfielder Mark Zagunis the winner for the week of June 15-21. The Carolina League midseason All-Star selection led the league in batting (.478) and slugging (.870) during the week, posting an OPS of 1.425 across the six games he played.

Zagunis, 22 and in his first full professional season, earns his first weekly Offensive Player of the Week Award. In addition to leading the league in hitting, slugging, and OPS, the outfielder doubled, tripled, homered twice, and drove in seven runs. He also walked four times and stole two bases. His week was highlighted by his first career two-homer game in a 4-for-4 effort on Friday against the Lynchburg Hillcats.

In six games, the former Virginia Tech Hokie reached safely in each game, three at Winston-Salem and three at home against Lynchburg. He collected hits in five of those contests and posted three multi-hit games during the week.

Zagunis is the third Pelicans hitter to earn Offensive Player of the Week, joining Kevin Brown and Billy McKinney. Tyler Skulina has also won a weekly award, taking Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 27-May 3.

The Pelicans had a player named Offensive Player of the Week six times last season (Joey Gallo, three times; Nick Williams, Jorge Alfaro, Ryan Cordell).

Wilmington right-hander Alec Mills won Pitcher of the Week this week.

Zagunis, along with his teammates Jeimer Candelario, Jonathan Martinez, and Duane Underwood Jr., will play in the Carolina vs. California League All-Star Game on Tuesday at LoanMart Field, home of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (Class A-Advanced, Los Angeles Dodgers). First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. PT / 10:35 p.m. ET.
