2nd inning dooms Rockies in Orem

July 1, 2015

A 5-run second inning lifted the Orem Owlz to 10-2 win over the Grand Junction Rockies Tuesday night at Brent Brown Ballpark.

The Owlz had just three hits in the inning, but Rockies starter Gavin Glanz walked three and allowed a 2-run triple to Alex Abbott and an RBI double to David Fletcher.

Tyler Nevin singled and scored the Rockies first run in the second, and after the Owlz five run second inning, Daniel Suero doubled home Cole Anderson.

Glanz recovered from the 5-run second inning and kept Orem off the board in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but the Owlz got to him in the sixth.

He retired the first two he faced in the inning, but Michael Pierson walked. Then Abbott made it 7-2 with a 2-run homer to right field. That ended the night for Glanz, who walked five and allowed seven runs in 5.2 innings.

Due to rain and lightning, there was a 52-minute delay in the bottom of the seventh inning, but when play was resumed, the Owlz scored three runs to make it a 10-2 game.

The loss drops the Rockies to 8-5 on the season, and gives Orem sole possession of first place in the Pioneer League South Division.

Grand Junction was limited to four hits, with Nevin accounting for half for the second multi-hit game of his career. He also stole a base for the first time.

Rockies pitching walked a season-high nine batter and only struck out four.
