Shuckers announce playoff roster for opening round

Macias, Ortega, Reed join Shuckers, Phillips reinstated from DL

BILOXI, MS - In conjunction with the Milwaukee Brewers, the Shuckers announced this morning its playoff roster for the opening round of the 2015 Southern League playoffs which begins tonight at 7:10 against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at MGM Park. The 25-man playoff roster includes a series of moves listed below.

  • Nathan Orf, INF, placed on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to 9/4
  • Brooks Hall, RHP, placed on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to 9/4
  • Hobbs Johnson, LHP, placed on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to 9/4
  • Martin Viramontes, RHP, placed on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to 9/7
  • Brandon Macias, INF, transferred to Biloxi from Colorado Springs
  • Michael Reed, OF, transferred to Biloxi from Colorado Springs
  • Jorge Ortega, transferred to Biloxi from Colorado Springs
  • Brett Phillips, reinstated from the 7-day disabled list

Reed, 22, a 2015 mid-season Southern League All-Star hit .278 with 20 doubles, five triples, five home runs, 49 RBI, .379 OBP and 25 stolen bases with the Shuckers in 93 games this season. Reed was promoted to Triple-A Colorado Springs on August 1. In 131 games this season between the Double-A and Triple-A level Reed batted .269 with 33 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, 70 RBI, .371 OBP and 26 stolen bases. Reed was named the Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Player of the Month for his performance during the month of May. Reed hit .380 with seven doubles, three triples, three home runs, 17 RBI, 13 walks and a .463 OBP. He was also a perfect 7-for-7 stealing bases.

Reed was Milwaukee's sixth round selection in 2011 out of Leander HS and resides in Cedar Park, TX.

Ortega, 22, was a 2015 mid-season and post-season All-Star in the Florida State league this season while with the Advanced-A Brevard County Manatees. The Caracas, Venezuela native set a Manatees single-season record with six complete games in 2015, including a nine-inning, four-hit shutout on 93 pitches in a 4-0 win over Jupiter on June 15. While with the 'Tees, Ortega went 10-9 with a 2.38 ERA over 23 games, 21 starts, logging 75 strikeouts and just 12 walks in 147.2 innings. Ortega went 40 innings this season without issuing a walks from May 12 to June 28. He also had a stretch of 30.1 innings without a walks from April 13 to May 6. In 12 of his 21 starts he did not issue a walk.

Ortega was promoted to Triple-A Colorado Springs on September 1 and made one start for the SkySox on September 5 at Security Service Field, earning the win in their 6-4 victory over New Orleans. During the start, Ortega allowed just one run on eight hits over six innings with one walk and three strikeouts.

Ortega was signed by Milwaukee on April 9, 2011 out of Venezuela

Macias, 26, played in 47 games for the Shuckers this season batting .245 with five doubles, a triple, two home runs, 17 RBI and two stolen bases. The Flagstaff, AZ native combined to bat .262 in 2015 in 78 games between Biloxi, Colorado Springs and Brevard County.

Phillips, 21, has been reinstated from Biloxi's disabled list. Phillips was acquired on July 30 from Houston by the Milwaukee Brewers and combined to bat .309 with 34 doubles, a minor league-leading 14 triples, 16 home runs, 77 RBI and 17 stolen bases between Houston's Lancaster and Corpus Christi and Biloxi.

Phillips came to Milwaukee from the Astros along with Shuckers' teammates RHP Adrian Houser, LHP Josh Hader and Brewers OF Domingo Santana in the deal.

The Shuckers open the Southern League playoffs and the best-of-five South Division Series tonight at MGM Park against the second half South Division Champ, Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The Shuckers have also partnered with First Command Financial Services to recognize a member from the Biloxi Fire and Police Departments as well as a member of the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, and Coast Guard. These seven individuals and their family members will be thanked on field before the game and participate in the game's honorary first pitch ceremony.
