May 16, 2016

CORPUS CHRISTI - Hooks third baseman J.D. Davis and left-handed pitcher Evan Grills are the Texas League Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for May 9-15.

Davis, 23, is a Cal State Fullerton product selected by Houston in the third round of June's 2014 draft. MLB.com's 11th-ranked prospect in the Astros system has a .400 (12-for-30) average over the last eight games with three home runs and nine RBIs. Over that span he's also scored seven runs and doubled four times.

Grills, 23, pitched a one-hit shutout in his Double-A debut as Corpus Christi swept a doubleheader from Frisco Friday. Grills faced two over the minimum; he struck Zach Cone with a pitch in the second and issued a walk to Kellin Deglan the next inning. Grills struck out five and threw 80 pitches (53).

Selected by Houston in the 10th round of the 2010 draft out of Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby, Ontario, Grills joined the Hooks from Advanced-A Lancaster of the California League.

The Hooks begin a four-game series in San Antonio Monday night. Follow the team on the road by tuning into NewsRadio 1360 KKTX, Michael Coffin on the call.
