EY Steals Record As Sky Sox Complete Sweep

Behind a record-breaking day from one of their veteran players, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox walked off to defeat the Round Rock Express 6-5 on Sunday afternoon to complete a four game sweep at Security Service Field.

Eric Young Jr. stole three bases in the game to put his Sky Sox career total at 105, passing Trenidad Hubbard's previous record of 104 to become the All-Time leading base stealer in Sky Sox franchise history.

Making his first start with the Sky Sox this season, Drew Gagnon (1-1, 7.05) got off to a rough start in the first. With two outs and a runner on base, Joey Gallo hit a two-run homer to left field to put the Express on the board first. Round Rock added a third run in the second as Preston Beck came home to score on an error and give the Express an early 3-0 lead.

Round Rock starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx (0-1, 3.74) couldn't hold the lead for long. Michael Reed led off the bottom of the second with a double. He then scored on a single from Young Jr. to get the Sky Sox on the board. After stealing second and advancing to third on a ground out, Young Jr. scored on a single to right from Yadiel Rivera to cut the deficit to a single run. Later in the inning, Nate Orf lined a single to center to score Kyle Wren from second with the tying run.

The Sky Sox took the lead in the third as Reed doubled and scored on another single from Young Jr. to give the Sky Sox a 4-3 lead in the third. Young Jr. then stole second for his second steal of the day to tie the record.  

Round Rock retook the lead in the fourth off Sky Sox reliever Tyler Cravy. With one out, Alex Burg doubled to score Kyle Kubitza and tie the game at four. Burg later scored on an error to give the Express a 5-4 lead in the fourth. Cravy rebounded after that, retiring seven batters in a row, five with strikeouts, between the fourth and sixth. 

In the sixth, Kyle Wren reached with a one out walk then stole second. A couple batters later, he came home to score when Orlando Arcia's ground ball was misplayed for an error to tie the game at five after six.

With a runner on second and one out in the seventh, Young Jr. hustled out an infield single to put runners on the corners. With Yadiel Rivera at the plate, Young Jr. stole second without a throw for his third steal of the day to break the club record.

Austin Ross entered for the Sky Sox in the eighth and was strong out of the bullpen. In the eighth, he got out of a jam by inducing a ground ball double play with one pitch. With runners on the corners and one out in the 10th, Ross induced another ground ball double play to keep the Express off the board. Ross would end up earning his fifth win of the season thanks to his offense.

In the bottom half, Wren led off with a double to put the winning run in scoring position. Orf followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Wren to third base. After Arcia was walked intentionally, Manny Pina came to the plate. The Sky Sox catcher delivered with a sacrifice fly to right to score Wren from third and give the Sky Sox their second walk-off win in three days and their third straight one run win.

Wren went five-for-five with a walk and three runs scored for the Sky Sox. In addition to his three steals, Young Jr. produced four hits and two runs batted in to lead the Sky Sox to victory.

The Sky Sox begin a four game series in Nashville against the Sounds on Monday night. Wily Peralta (0-3, 7.16) is scheduled to get the start for the Sky Sox. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. MDT at First Tennessee Park.
