MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (August 1, 2016) - Myrtle Beach Pelicans first baseman Yasiel Balaguert has been named the Carolina League's Player of the Week for the week of July 25-31, the league office announced Monday. The award is the second straight circuit Player of the Week honor for Balaguert and his third this season.

Balaguert went 13-for-32 at the plate throughout the week, posting a .406/.412/.719 line with four doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs and seven runs scored in seven games. The La Habana, Cuba native recorded his first career multi-homer game in a 10-7 win on July 27 vs. Carolina. Additionally, Balaguert hit in six of the contests throughout the week, with multiple knocks in five games.

Signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2011, Balaguert has hits in 14 of his last 16 games, batting .386/.434/.643 with nine doubles, three homers and 22 RBIs during that span.

No one in the Carolina League has played in more games (105) or tallied more at-bats (404) than Balaguert. He currently ranks third in RBIs (75), fourth in HR (15) and fifth in HR/AB (1/26.93).

Balaguert also won the circuit's Player of the Week for May 16-22 and July 18-24. Former Pelicans infielder Ian Happ took home the award for April 18-24 and June 13-19, while current infielder Jason Vosler was named the league's honoree for May 9-15.

Myrtle Beach begins a three-game series with Monday's 7 p.m. contest at Frederick. The Pelicans currently reside in first place of the Carolina League's Southern Division.
