Legends pound out 15 hits in 9-5 win over Sand Gnats

July 9, 2009
(APPLEBEE'S PARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends extended their winning streak to four games with a 9-5 victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats at Applebee's Park Thursday night. The Legends had 15 hits against four Savannah pitchers.

Savannah held a 2-0 lead with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the second inning, but Ebert Rosario singled, Brian Pellegrini walked and Albert Cartwright followed with his fifth home run of the year to put Lexington in front 3-2.

The Legends would need to come from behind again. Jordan Abruzzo hit the first of his two solo homers in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3, and the Sand Gnats took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on another solo shot by Raul Reyes.

Lexington took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Jackson's sacrifice fly and doubles by Michael Diaz and Steve Brown produced three runs to put the Legends in front 6-4.

Jay Austin had three hits for Lexington and is now hitting .419 (18 for 43) in his last 10 games. Rosario also had three hits, and Diaz batted in three runs.

Legends starter David Duncan, a 6-9 left-hander who just joined the team after being promoted from Tri-City in the New York-Penn League, picked up the victory, though he allowed nine hits and five runs in five innings. Jeurys Familia (6-6) was the starter and loser for Savannah.

The Legends have won the first two games of the four-game series, which resumes Friday night at Applebee's Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
