Cubs get all four runs in the sixth inning

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Kernels lost 4-1 to the South Bend Cubs on Friday night. The Cubs earned their first win of the series by scoring all four runs in the sixth inning. The Kernels broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Kernels lost 4-1 to the South Bend Cubs on Friday night. The Cubs earned their first win of the series by scoring all four runs in the sixth inning.

The Kernels broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. A RBI double to left-center by Jefferson Morales scored Willie Joe Garry Jr, who reached on an infield single with one out.

However, the lead was short-lived as South Bend scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Cubs sent nine batters to the plate in the inning as they collected four hits, drew one walk and took advantage of one error.

Matthew Swain (1-3) allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits in the sixth inning for the loss.

Jon Olsen started on the mound for the Kernels and tossed three scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out one and walking one. Ryan Shreve, Tyler Palm, Derek Molina and Regi Grace all posted scoreless outings for the Kernels in relief.

Daniel Palencia struck out five and allowed just one hit and one walk over four scoreless innings as the starting pitcher for the Cubs.

Joe Nahas (4-3) earned the win for the Cubs in relief, striking out six and walking four while allowing one run on three hits. Riley Martin earned his first save by recording the final four outs.

The Kernels host South Bend on Saturday evening at 6:35 p.m. Fans can enjoy fireworks after the game, presented by Special Olympics Iowa.
