Columbus, OH --- Shawn Morimando threw his first career nine-inning complete game, tossing a five-hit shutout to lead Columbus past Durham 8-0 on Thursday night at Huntington Park.
The Clippers (32-33) struck for three home runs, including a three-run blast in the first inning by Chris Colabello against Durham starting pitcher Ryan Yarbrough (L, 5-4). Still leading 3-0 in the sixth, former Bulls third baseman Richie Shaffer cranked out his league-tying 14th homer for a 4-0 advantage. Later in the inning, reliever Diego Castillo surrendered a three-run shot to Todd Hankins as the Clippers took a 7-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Morimando (W, 5-5) worked a 103-pitch gem, aided by three double plays en route to his third career complete game. However, in the other two Morimondo suffered losses in doubleheader games throwing six innings apiece.
Yarbrough worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and six earned runs to absorb the loss. Castillo was charged for two runs over 1 2/3 innings, with Chih-Wei Hu recording the final two outs of the eighth.
The Bulls' lead in the South was trimmed to five over second place Gwinnett, which polished off a three-game sweep of Toledo on Thursday night.
Durham heads to face the MudHens on Friday night with Blake Snell starting against Drew Verhagen at 7:05 PM ET.
