FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (June 11, 2019) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans could not overcome a 5-0 deficit after the first inning as they fell to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 5-1 on Tuesday night from Segra Stadium.

The Woodpeckers (28-36) jumped all over the Pelicans' (20-42) starter Erick Leal (0-1), who surrendered five runs in the first inning.
After a sacrifice fly from Jake Adams brought in the games first run, Enmanuel Valdez blasted a grand slam to right center that gave the Woodpeckers a 5-0 lead after the first.
Leal then settled in and gave the Pelicans six innings without allowing a run after the first inning, but the Birds could not climb out of the hole against Luis Garcia (2-0) who allowed just one hit in five innings of shutout baseball.
The Pelicans found the scoreboard in the top of the eighth inning when D.J. Wilson scored from third on an error that made it 5-1 Fayetteville, but that is all the Birds could get as they fell in their sixth-straight contest.
Myrtle Beach will wrap up the three-game set with the Woodpeckers on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. RHP Alex Lange (1-8, 8.41) will toe the rubber for the Pelicans against RHP Brett Conine (1-0, 1.40) for the Woodpeckers in the series finale.
Coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. on the Pelicans Baseball Network which is available on the TuneIn App, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast and MiLB First Pitch app.
