Tulsa Drillers outfielder D.J. Peters concluded the 2018 regular season as the hottest hitter in the Texas League. On Tuesday, he was recognized for his performance, being named the league's Batter of the Week.
Peters entered the final week, hitting just .167 for the month of August, but the outfielder broke out of his slump in a big way. He hit safely in his final six games, going 12-24 (.500) with 7 extra-base hits, including five home runs. He also collected 7 runs batted in over his final six games.
The week capped a big season for the 22-year-old, who is ranked as the 8th-best prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league system by MLB.com. Peters led the Texas League and all of Double-A baseball with 29 homers. It was the fifth-most in Drillers franchise history, just four short of Tim Wheeler's all-time team record of 33 home runs set in 2011.
He played a big part in the team's franchise record of 184 total homers this season. The Drillers led all TL teams in both home runs and runs scored.
Peters is just the third Tulsa player to receive the Batter of the Week award in 2018, joining Drew Jackson and Jacob Scavuzzo.
Peters and the Drillers will open play in the Texas League Playoffs on Wednesday in Little Rock with Game 1 of the best-of-five North Division Series against the Arkansas Travelers. The Drillers will host Game 3 at ONEOK Field on Friday, September 7 (7:05 p.m.). They will also host, if necessary, Games 4 and 5 on Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9.
